While exploring the National Elk Refuge, a variety of other wildlife is in abundance. From majestic eagles to playful coyotes, wolves and trumpeter swans--there's plenty of breathtaking sights to behold. Remember to dress warmly for your sleigh ride!


When is The National Elk Refuge Open for Sleigh Rides?


Get ready to experience a magical, winter ride on our sleighs! Enjoy the beauty of nature with us from 10am-4pm (weather permitting) every day during the December 14 - April 3 season. Sleighs will depart approximately once every half hour for 45 minutes – 1 hour. There are no sleigh rides on Christmas Day.

You can also enjoy a private, festive journey and create magical memories with an enchanting sleigh ride experience. Private sleigh rides are available upon request.


Where Can I Buy Tickets for the National Elk Refuge Sleigh Ride?


Stop by 532 N. Cache St in Jackson between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to purchase tickets from the white trailer located near the parking lot.


How Much Does The National Elk Refuge Sleigh Ride Cost?


General adult admission for sleigh rides at The National Elk Refuge cost $35 per person, $20 for children ages 5-12, and children 4 and under are free. Gratuity for sleigh driver and guide is not included in this price and is optional.

If you need to modify or cancel your reservation, make sure you let them know within 48 hours of the original confirmed date. Failure to do so may result in having to pay the full cost for ticket(s).

Blankets are not provided for guests on the sleigh ride, so it is recommended to dress very warmly. It is recommended that you make reservations far in advance of your desired ride time, as availability is limited, especially around the holiday season. To ensure you don't miss out on a magical experience, it is suggested to arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to guarantee access.


When is the Best Time for a Sleigh Ride at The National Elk Refuge?


Elk behavior is an ever-changing art that varies depending on the time of day and seasonal weather patterns. Generally, elk are most active between 11am - 2pm when it's at its warmest, eating in groups if they're being fed or grazing solo once the food supply has been depleted.

During cooler times such as morning and evening hours their behaviors vary from standing to lying down while keeping a keen eye out for predators. Despite best efforts there’s no way to accurately predict how the elk will behave each day.
