Can I Visit The National Elk Refuge?

Nestled in the stunning mountains of Wyoming lies a unique sanctuary that is home to one of North America's largest elk (or wapiti) herds - The National Elk Refuge. Established more than 100 years ago, this 24,700-acre refuge serves as critical habitat for an average 7500 elk during winters and is administered by US Fish & Wildlife Service under US Department of Interior. 

It borders Jackson Hole on the southwest side while Bridger Teton National Forest and Grand Teton NP respectively flank it from east and north sides. Winter visitors to the National Elk Refuge are treated to a truly unique experience with sleigh tours from mid-December through March/early April conditions permitting. So make sure you take advantage of this extraordinary event while it is available!

 

Can I Drive Into The National Elk Refuge?


Yes, you can drive into The National Elk Refuge. Take Refuge Road to get up close and personal with nature. Keep an eye on conditions before you go, however, as a blanket of snow can turn this route into an icy adventure! In the winter months, the drive is limited to just 3.5 miles in so that your presence doesn't disturb any wildlife. 

There are also wonderful bike and walking paths that run along the main road, so you can experience a more eco-friendly experience.

To ensure the safety of animals living on the Refuge, access to certain paths and roads may be limited. Please take this into consideration when exploring for a truly unforgettable experience.

 

National Elk Refuge Trails


The National Elk Refuge is an iconic destination for wildlife viewing that remains undisturbed due to its limited access points. It's a unique opportunity to experience nature in all of its untamed glory. There are a variety of trails located in the Refuge for your use.

Take a journey along the 6 mile paved trail of Jackson Hole National Wildlife Refuge, taking in its stunning wetland and grassland habitats. Then connect to further trails in Grand Teton National Park for more breathtaking exploration.

Experience the stunning beauty of Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge like never before  with a 40 mile round trip cycling adventure, taking you from one end to the other without ever needing your car.  Come discover all that nature has to offer as you pedal through this breathtaking landscape.

For an energizing excursion steeped in adventure, head to the National Elk Refuge & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center. Explore Flat Creek from its starting point on the northern lawn and keep your eyes peeled for cutthroat trout, river otters and a variety of ducks that call this picturesque spot home.

Jackson National Fish Hatchery


Experience a unique adventure at the Jackson National Fish Hatchery! This location, situated on the majestic National Elk Refuge, has something fun in store for everyone. Come explore this hatchery production site and picnic beside picturesque ponds - you can even cast your line into some of Wyoming's best fishing spots (fishing license necessary). Open daily from 10AM to 4PM (except federal holidays).
